DC will give away free superhero NFTs to people who register for its FanDome event - The Verge

DC is giving away free non-fungible tokens (NFTs) of its superhero comic book covers to people who register for its October 16th FanDome event. The NFT drop— the first for DC— is set for October 5th, and those who register for FanDome will receive one free, randomly-selected NFT, and become eligible for a second free NFT if they post about their first one on social media.

The NFTs will come in three levels of rarity; common, rare, and legendary, and will include Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Harley Quinn options.

What’s an NFT?

NFTs allow you to buy and sell ownership of unique digital items and keep track of who owns them using the blockchain. NFT stands for “non-fungible token,” and it can technically contain anything digital, including drawings, animated GIFs, songs, or items in video games. An NFT can either be one-of-a-kind, like a real-life painting, or one copy of many, like trading cards, but the blockchain keeps track of who has ownership of the file.

NFTs have been making headlines lately, some selling for millions of dollars, with high-profile memes like Nyan Cat and the “deal with it” sunglasses being put up for auction. There’s also a lot of discussion about the massive electricity use and environmental impacts of NFTs. If you (understandably) still have questions, you can read through our NFT FAQ.

DC is working on the NFTs with Palm NFT Studio, which the comic maker chose for its “environmentally sustainable and energy efficient” technology, which let the company mint “millions of NFTs for fans with near zero cost,” according to a news release. The companies aren’t saying how many comic-book cover NFTs are planned. “This drop pays homage to our 87 year history while visualizing a future in which NFTs play a foundational role in novel ways of interacting with DC content and unlocking new experiences,” DC’s Jim Lee said in a statement.

Last year’s virtual FanDome, the first ever for DC Comics and Warner Bros., provided first-look trailers for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad, and Robert Pattison’s turn as The Batman. It drew an estimated 22 million views.

This year’s lineup is expected to include a new trailer for The Batman, as well as previews of upcoming movies Black Adam, The Flash, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, new details about the next seasons for its shows Harley Quinn, Batwoman, Superman & Lois, and Sweet Tooth, and the next chapter of the Fortnite — Batman crossover.

Free Agent Notes: Correa, Iglesias, Rodriguez - MLB Trade Rumors

The upcoming free agent shortstop market has been talked about for awhile now, and we’re still a few months off from seeing how the whole thing plays out. Perhaps the most coveted of the soon-to-be available shortstops is the Astros’ Carlos Correa. One potential match for Correa’s services will be the Tigers, tweets MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

The Tigers are an up-and-coming team with plenty of financial flexibility, and it’s certainly interesting to think about Correa once again teaming up with his former skipper A.J. Hinch. As hard as it is to imagine Correa leaving Houston, they do have prospect Jeremy Pena waiting in the wings, making an exit at least feasible. The Tigers, meanwhile, have one of the most open shortstop situations in the game, with incumbent Niko Goodrum easily able to shift into a super-utility role.

Angels’ closer Raisel Iglesias figures to be another in-demand free agent this winter. His priority, however, is re-signing with the Angels, writes Jeff Fletcher of the Orange-County Register. Iglesias made the most of his first season with the Angels, tossing 69 innings in 64 appearances with a 2.61 ERA/2.87 FIP. He has notched 34 saves, a mark that will look attractive to contenders this offseason.

In terms of rotations arms, there are few with the upside of the Red Sox’ Eduardo Rodriguez. Rodriguez and the Red Sox spoke about a possible extension earlier in the year, but there wasn’t much progress made and the two sides ultimately decided to table talks until the offseason, per Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. After complications from COVID-19 cost Rodriguez all of 2020, he has returned to his usual stable workload, making 31 starts for the playoff hopefuls.

Rodriguez hasn’t quite pitched to his pre-2020 level, though his 4.77 ERA may be a touch inflated. A 3.33 FIP suggests the 28-year-old hasn’t lost a step. He’s tossed 156 2/3 innings with an above-average 27.4 percent strikeout rate, 7.0 percent walk rate, 44.2 percent groundball rate, all numbers that will look good on Rodriguez’s free agent resume this winter.

No. 19 Michigan found out, almost the hard way, that its running game can be slowed down.

Hassan Haskins ran for touchdowns the first two times the Wolverines had the ball to help them take a 17-point lead, but the undefeated team had to hold on to beat Rutgers 20-13 on Saturday.

“Gritty game,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. “It wasn’t pretty, but when they start making a space for pretty on the scoreboard then we’ll worry about that.”

Michigan (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) opened conference play by running the ball on its first seven snaps and Harbaugh’s conservative game plan almost cost him. After leading 20-3 at halftime, the Wolverines failed to pick up a first down on their first four possessions in the second half.

“We just couldn’t really find a rhythm and that’s the first time that’s happened when I’ve been in the game,” quarterback Cade McNamara said.

The Scarlet Knights (3-1, 0-1) rallied from a 17-point, third-quarter deficit to pull within seven early in the fourth quarter, but Valentino Ambrosio missed a short field goal. On their next possession, they turned it over on downs and fell to 1 of 4 on fourth down.

“We’re going to be aggressive,” Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said. “We’re not here to be close.”

Michigan ended its drought without a first down late in the fourth quarter to set up a 47-yard field goal and a chance to earn a two-score lead, but Jake Moody missed it.

That gave Rutgers the ball with 1:49 left and no timeouts. Two snaps later, quarterback Noah Vedral fumbled for his team’s first turnover of the season to seal the defeat.

“We certainly had our opportunity to win the game, and that’s what hurt,” Schiano said. “Nobody’s here for moral victories. We came here to win the game, and that’s what we fully expected to do.”

Michigan entered the game averaging 350.3 yards rushing to lead the nation and was held to just 112 yards on the ground. Blake Corum was limited to 68 yards — half his average — on 21 attempts and Haskins ran for just 41 yards on 12 carries. McNamara was 9 of 16 for 163 yards passing for the Wolverines, missing some open receivers including one in the end zone.

“We know that’s not going to get the job done,” McNamara said. “We have to get better for sure.”

Isaih Pacheco had 107 yards rushing for the Scarlet Knights, who won their first three games for the first time since 2012. Vedral was 18 of 31 for 156 yards with a touchdown pass to Aaron Young in the third quarter, starting the comeback that fell short.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2021-22 Ohio State men’s hockey squad will begin play Saturday, as it hosts Western Michigan in an exhibition game at 4 p.m. in Value City Arena in The Schottenstein Center. Admission and parking are free. General parking will be in Gray parking lots 3-7, with ADA parking in the Scarlet 1 and 2 lots. Doors will open at 3 p.m. and entry is through the northwest and northeast rotundas. All seating will be general admission.

There will be no video or radio coverage of the exhibition game. Live stats will be available HERE.

NCAA rules this year allow for Division 1 men’s hockey teams to have an exhibition game against other DI opponents, where in years past most exhibition games were against Canadian university teams. Statistics and results from the game vs. the Broncos will be unofficial and will not be included in 2021-22 statistics and records. Teams are not limited on the number of players dressed for exhibition games.

Buckeyes vs. Broncos

• Ohio State and Western Michigan skated as members of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association until 2012-13 when the league was disbanded. Ohio State was a founding member of the conference in 1971-72 and played for two years before leaving for two seasons (1973-74, `74-75) and skating as an independent. Ohio State then rejoined the CCHA for the 1975-1976 campaign and remained until 2013. The Broncos were in the CCHA from 1975-76 through the 2013 campaign.
• Western Michigan is now a part of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
• The Buckeyes are 61-66-14 all-time vs. Western Michigan. The teams last met Oct. 11, 2019 in the first round of the Ice Breaker Tournament in Toledo, Ohio. The squads skated to a 2-2 overtime tie. Ohio State won the shootout to advance to the tournament’s championship game, where the Buckeyes topped RIT for their first Ice Breaker title.

The Schedule Ahead

• The regular season kicks off for the Buckeyes next week with games at Bentley Oct. 8-9. They will be streamed through FloHockey.tv.
• The Buckeyes start the home slate with games against UConn Oct. 15-16 before opening the Big Ten season at home the next weekend against Michigan State Oct. 29-30.
