How to watch opening day of the NFL 2022 season live online for free—and without cable - Fortune

The preseason was fun, but it’s time to get serious. The NFL kicks off its 2022–2023 season tonight.

While the bulk of the games will take place Sunday, there’s a certain appeal to the true first game of the season. And the league is starting things off with a corker.

The Buffalo Bills will face the Los Angeles Rams, pitting the leader of last year’s AFC East against the winner of Super Bowl LVI.

Grab a drink and settle into the couch or your favorite barstool. Football is back. Here’s a look at who’s playing whom and how best to catch the game.

Which NFL teams are opening the 2022 season? And what channel is airing the game?

Here’s how opening night is shaping up. (The home team is listed second.)

Thursday, Sept. 8

Buffalo Bills vs. Los Angeles Rams, 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.

How can I watch NFL games for free—even if I am out of market?

The best way to watch any sort of network programming for free on a big screen is with a good HD antenna. And watching preseason NFL games is simple, since many air on broadcast networks, meaning you’ll be able to watch even if you don’t have a cable subscription. To ensure you’re getting the most reliable signal, be sure to test the antenna in multiple locations in your home.

Note, however, that you’ll only be able to watch the Thursday night game over the air. Starting next week, the rights revert to a strictly online provider.

Can I stream NFL games live online if I don’t have a cable subscription?

There are, in fact, several options.

Peacock

NBC’s streaming service will give you access to several games. You can get a seven-day free trial, followed by a $5 or $10 monthly charge. (The free version of Peacock does not include live sports.)

Disney+

Disney’s bundle of Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ no longer has a free trial, so you’ll have to pay $13.99 per month for all three combined (or $19.99 per month for no ads on Hulu). Including Live TV in the bundle bumps the price to $70 per month ($76 with no ads).

Hulu with Live TV

The free trial on this service is also no longer offered. It will cost you $70 per month.

YouTubeTV

After an up to two-week trial, you can expect monthly charges of $65.

Sling TV

Dish Network’s Sling has a lower-tiered “Orange” plan that will run you $35 per month. Adding the more comprehensive “Blue” plan bumps the cost to $50 per month. You’ll have a seven-day free trial first—and right now, the cord-cutting service is cutting the first month’s bill in half.

DirecTV Stream

Formerly known as DirecTV Now, AT&T TVNow, and AT&T TV, this oft-renamed streaming service will run you at least $70 per month after the free trial option.

Fubo TV

This sports-focused cord-cutting service carries broadcast networks in most markets. There’s a seven-day free trial, followed by monthly charges of $70–$100, depending on the channels you choose.

Can I watch the NFL opening night game on Amazon?

NBC has exclusive broadcast rights to opening night this year. However, starting Sept. 15, Amazon Prime will be the exclusive home to Thursday Night Football.

Does the NFL offer any viewing packages to watch the games I want?

Yep.

NFL App

The NFL App will let you stream games that are being broadcast locally in your market on Sundays. If you want to watch an “out of market” game, you’ve got two choices.

NFL+

Watch live local and out-of-market games and (with the premium subscription) replays. There’s a seven-day free trial, after which you’re looking at a $30 charge per season. ($80 for premium.)

NFL Sunday Ticket

DirecTV customers have access to it, but if you meet the conditions, like living in an apartment complex or some area where you can’t get DirecTV, you can also sign up for an online version, letting you watch any NFL game live this season. There’s a one-week trial; then you’re looking at monthly charges of $73.49 per month for a four-month period or $293.36 for the entire season (or $99 for four months, or $396).

China Hawks Sound Alarm Over Podesta Appointment - Washington Free Beacon

Lawmakers worry ex-Clinton aide will give communist nation a powerful ally in the White House

Biden climate adviser John Podesta and Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi in 2014 / Chinese Embassy
• September 8, 2022 4:20 pm

President Joe Biden on Friday tapped John Podesta to oversee $370 billion in climate spending, a move that has China hawks on Capitol Hill concerned over Podesta's encouragement of Chinese investment in American infrastructure and praise for the top U.S. adversary on climate change.

Podesta has called for Chinese investment in American infrastructure, arguing in 2013 that there are "great opportunities for Chinese firms to directly invest in this nation, to build American infrastructure, to create American jobs, and generate steady and handsome returns." He added, "There's also the ability for Chinese firms to invest here and learn best practices, and take those home to the tremendous and growing middle class market in China."

Instead, in the intervening decade, the Chinese government has committed widespread economic espionage—one 2017 estimate found that China steals up to $600 billion in trade secrets a year. Engineers in China, meanwhile, use popular social media platform TikTok to access nonpublic data from U.S. users.

Podesta has also praised China's efforts to combat climate change, arguing in 2015 that the Chinese "are beginning to do a fair amount." China, which is the world's top carbon emitter, went on to dramatically accelerate its coal consumption, which reached a record high in 2020.

That record has China hawks on the Hill concerned that America's top adversary has a new—and powerful—ally in the White House. Podesta's role will see the liberal consultant implement $370 billion in spending toward alternative energy, a sector that China dominates when it comes to raw materials. As such, alternative energy companies receiving the Podesta-steered funding could turn to China to secure supplies. The new Biden aide will likely take no issue with that dynamic, given that he has argued the United States and China should "align" on a green economy. Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R., Tenn.) and Ted Cruz (R., Texas) argued that the move reflects the White House's soft-on-China stance.

"It is no surprise that the Biden White House hired John Podesta, who has known links to China. This White House does not understand that Beijing is our enemy and a part of the New Axis of Evil," Blackburn told the Washington Free Beacon. Cruz echoed Blackburn's sentiment, calling it "unsurprising that Biden officials are entangled with the [Chinese Communist Party]." Cruz also expressed concern over Podesta's appointment given that the green energy field "float[s] on Chinese money."

The White House did not return a request for comment.

Prior to his Biden White House role, Podesta served for eight years as president of the Center for American Progress (CAP), a liberal think tank that in a 2017 report heaped praise on China, arguing that Beijing had "grabb[ed] the clean energy bull by the horns" and embarked on a "truly impressive" shift away from dirty energy sources such as coal. China quickly proved the report wrong—it loosened its restrictions on coal projects from 2017 to 2019, prompting a mad dash to build new power plants. CAP later acknowledged that trend as "deeply concerning."

Beyond the issue of climate change, CAP has also worked extensively with the China-U.S. Exchange Foundation, a registered foreign agent backed by the Chinese Communist Party's foreign influence arm. During a 2013 speech, Podesta credited the foundation with providing the American and Chinese governments "with an important set of recommendations" to "bring our two nations closer together."

Podesta's newfound role advising Biden on climate could lead to the president declaring a national climate emergency, E&E News reported Tuesday.

Lea Michele Makes ‘Funny Girl’ Debut Tonight Free Of Critics (For Now); First-Look Photos Unveiled - Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Lea Michele will be making her public debut as Fanny Brice in Broadway’s Funny Girl tonight, but don’t expect reviews tomorrow. A production spokesperson tells Deadline exclusively that while critics will be accommodated who want to review – or, rather, re-review – the musical with its new star, the accommodations won’t be made for a few weeks.

According to the spokesperson, producers will wait to open the show to reviewers once the full company, including Michele and Tovah Feldshuh as Mrs. Brice, have had a “brief time to perform together.” While Michele and Feldshuh begin tonight, some of the other principal actors remain on vacation, and the full company is not in place due to some current cases of Covid.

The timeline for critics reviews will be firmed up over the next couple weeks, with reviewers likely to be accommodated for performances toward the end of September.

Critics en masse are infrequently invited to re-review Broadway productions with or without replacement casts, though individual requests for invitations are considered.

With Michele, though, interest among critics and the public is exceedingly high for any number of reasons – the controversies that surrounded the production with the early departure of original star Beanie Feldstein, not to mention Feldstein’s lukewarm reviews and lack of a Tony nomination. Critics and audiences are no doubt curious as to whether the revival can generate the plaudits that had all but evaporated for the musical in recent weeks, not to mention box office success.

Of course, there’s nothing from stopping eager critics from purchasing a ticket before official accommodations are made, but reviewers are generally amenable to experiencing a reviewed performance under best circumstances possible, with full casts and companies ready, able and fully rehearsed to turn in optimal efforts.

In addition to the new company members, some minor adjustments reportedly have been made to the production, including the new inclusion of the Fanny Brice song “I’d Rather Be Blue Over You” that was performed by Barbra Streisand in the film version but was not until now part of the current stage production.

In a sense, Michele is being given a “preview” period that usually only the original casts receive. Only difference is, there will be no official new opening night for the replacement cast, which includes not only Michele but Feldshuh taking over from Jane Lynch. A second opening night party is not planned, nor will there be red carpet arrivals tonight for Michele’s first performance. The official opening date for this Funny Girl revival is and will remain April 24, 2022.

Also, the production has released first-look photos of Michele in the role of Fanny. See them in full below.

Emmys host Kenan Thompson predicts conflict-free ceremony - ABC News

LOS ANGELES -- Emmy Awards host Kenan Thompson and the ceremony's producers are predicting a conflict-free zone, unlike the Oscars show that was marred by an on-stage slap.

Thompson said the confrontation last March in which Will Smith attacked presenter Chris Rock over a joke directed at Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, was both unsettling and avoidable.

“It kind of just threw the entire world off guard, basically, and that won’t happen again," Thompson told The Associated Press. “Even if I am roasting (someone), it shouldn't come across as any sort of malice.”

If a joke ends up stinging, he said, an apology and conversation may be in order. But Rock — who “doesn't have a mean bone in his body," Thompson said — or any other comic shouldn't expect a reaction like Smith's to a quip.

A first-time Emmy host, the veteran “Saturday Night Live” cast member is following in the footsteps of other “SNL” colleagues including Michael Che, Colin Jost and Andy Samberg.

Thompson said he slept on the offer before saying yes. The ceremony airs 8 p.m. EDT Monday, Sept. 12, on NBC and will stream live on Peacock, with dramas “Succession” and “Squid Game" and comedies “Ted Lasso” and “Hacks” among the leading nominees.

“It's a huge deal, and it’s not necessarily something that I want to drop the ball on. So I was like, ‘Let me sit with this,’” he said. After talking with producers, he knew that he wanted to do it and the approach to take.

“This should be a night of appreciating artistry and creativity and removing the stress of it all out. I get it — it sucks to lose, and everybody's picking outfits and trying to do the red carpet thing,” Thompson said. “But at the same time, it's an awesome thing to be in the room on Emmys night, and I don't want that to get lost in the stress.”

Reginald Hudlin and Ian Stewart, returning as executive producers for the ceremony, consider Thompson perfect for the job.

“He is beloved, and from the time we announced him there’s been nothing but positive responses,” Hudlin said. “He has these great connections with everyone, and we’re going to maximize those connections.....He’s the unofficial mayor of Hollywood."

While Rock was the first participant at a major awards show to pay physically for a joke, Ricky Gervais has drawn his share of celebrity frowns for the insult humor he routinely employed as Golden Globes host.

Stars taking part in the Emmys needn't worry about being in the line of comedic fire with Thompson, Stewart said.

“If you went to Kenan’s house for a party, you know it’s just going to be a fun, easy time with a lot of laughs,” he said. “There's nothing that can be in any way aggressive or acerbic. He’s not that man.”

Viewers have come to know Thompson's style from “SNL," where he's a regular part of music video send-ups and plays vivid characters including the spotlight-hogging host of “What Up With That." He also starred in the just-ended sitcom “Kenan.”

Is there a part of him as a performer he's eager to showcase on the Emmys? “How quick I can be on my toes,” he replied, then turned the question outward.

“We know the people who are in the categories," he said, but there could be the welcome surprise of, say, a legendary actor in attendance.

"We should be aware, and point that out and celebrate them," he said. “I really want the community aspect of it all to be in the forefront."

Asked if he'll take part in any musical numbers, Thompson said it's more than likely.

“I think we need to open with a bang.... (and) there's some some ideas cooking on that level. But whatever it is, it has got to be tight, and it can’t seem like it's just there to fill time,” he said. “We have their (viewers) attention. It'd better be worth having."

Best sites for free online courses - Fast Company

Take that college course you missed out on, get better at your job, or learn a new skill altogether with these free online learning resources.

These sites offer thousands of free online classes on just about everything
[Photo: Vlada Karpovich/Unsplash]

Love is a strange thing. For instance, I love my three young children. On the other hand, I also love when they go back to school each fall.

I also, in my mid-forties, still love learning. So about this time each year, as all the kids are heading back to class, I get inspired myself to go back to school, as it were—from the comfort of my desk.

In that spirit, here’s a shortlist of thousands of free online courses from some of the big-name education waypoints around the web. You’ll find everything from straightforward college courses to professional development to learning new hobbies.

EdX: 3,600+ free courses

If you can’t find a learning experience for free on EdX, it probably doesn’t exist. The site’s raison d’être: serving up online courses from top colleges and universities around the world, almost all of which can be audited at no cost.

That’s the catch, though it’s a small one. Auditing a course means you miss out on tests, quizzes, and certain course materials. However, you can pay in order to get real-life course credit. Course costs can run into the thousands, just like real-life school. But if you’re looking to absorb and retain material, and don’t mind not be tested on it, this is a great place to start.

Coursera: 2,500+ free courses

Coursera is similar to EdX, although it does have a dedicated free courses section. Compared to EdX, Coursera skews a bit more toward professional training, but it’s likely you’ll be able to find a fair amount of overlap if you look hard enough.

That being said, give Coursera a shot if you’re looking to do a bit of professional development in your spare time.

Codecademy: 100+ free coding courses

Looking to try your hand at programming? Spin up a free Codecademy account.

Then, on its catalog page, scroll down to the “Most popular courses” section and filter the dropdown submenu to select free courses.

That’s a good place to start, although there’s no overarching free section that shows you every single freebie. But once you find a coding discipline that really speaks to you, you can drill into it from the left-hand nav and filter free courses similarly.

Udemy: 500+ free courses

Last stop: Udemy’s free courses section. Here you’ll find a nice mix of professional development, coding classes, and classes that teach you new skills, such as how to take better photos or learn a particular software product.

If you’re interested in real-world learning from people working inside various industries—not necessarily professors, in other words—then you’ll likely find what you’re looking for here. You can even sign up to teach classes yourself if you’re an expert in your field.
