Ben Simmons, Sixers discuss free throw struggles in loss to Wizards - Sixers Wire

The Washington Wizards knew they had a bit of a size advantage with the Philadelphia 76ers so they decided to use a strategy that is not universally well-liked, but it is a strategy nonetheless to keep efficient teams from scoring on offense.

The Wizards went to the hacking strategy and their target was Ben Simmons. He was 0-for-9 from the foul line in the first three games of the series and he has really struggled from the line since the All-Star break.

The result was the Wizards were able to disrupt Philadelphia’s offense and they were able to come away with a 122-114 win to keep the series alive. Simmons shot 5-for-11 from the line in the loss as he had a tough time being able to knock down free throws, mostly splitting them, and the Wizards were then in a groove on the offensive end and the Sixers were not able to run any offense because of Washington hacking Simmons.

“Analytically, if you split all those free throws, offensively, you’ll take a point per possession,” said coach Doc Rivers. “He did that. I have no issues. Obviously, we’d love it if he made them both, but I didn’t think that changed the game at all for us so I was fine with it. If he had missed them both, then that is something, but overall, I was fine with it. That’s what they should do and we’re fine with that.”

Normally in a situation such as this one, a team will take out the bad foul shooter and insert somebody who is a little better in that situation. However, that thought did not cross Rivers’ mind.

“You want me to take Ben Simmons off the floor?” Rivers retorted. “I’ll pass on that one. He’s pretty good so I’ll pass on that suggestion.”

To Rivers’ point, Simmons had had a pretty terrific Round 1 series with Washington outside of his poor foul shooting. So there is reason to leave him out there on the floor.

“He still does other things,” Rivers continued. “He split them all and I’ll take that. Obviously, I want him to make more. Ben’s not an 80% free-throw shooter.”

After the All-Star break, Simmons shot 53.3% from the line to close out the regular season. He has then struggled from the line in this series and at this point, it is all on him to be able to work everything out.

“Just step up and knock them down, for real,” he said. “That’s about it. I’m not discouraged going to the line so I got to knock them down. It is what it is so I just got to step up and knock them down.”

Some guys could get upset with a hacking strategy. It disrupts the flow of the offense and it throws off the rhythm of both the player being hacked and the whole team.

However, Simmons is not upset with the strategy. He just has to step up and do his job.

“No, I’m not upset, it’s basketball,” he added. “Nah, I’m not upset.”

The scene now shifts back to Philadelphia for Game 5 on Wednesday where Simmons will undoubtedly see more of the “Hack-a-Ben” strategy from the Wizards.

“Just keep working on them,” Rivers added. “I think he will. I didn’t think he was scared of the moment. He just didn’t make them. With Ben, we’re gonna keep him on the floor. Unless you guys want us to bench him the whole game, if anybody wants us to do that, just let me know. Then I’ll know you don’t know basketball.”

Knockout City is now free to play until you reach level 25 - The Verge

EA just released its chaotic and fun new multiplayer dodgeball game, Knockout City, on May 21st, and for the launch, had put together a special promotion: the full game would be free to play until May 30th, after which you could pay $19.99 on the platform of your choice if you wanted to keep playing. (It’s also included with an EA Play or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.)

But on Sunday, EA and developer Velan Studios announced that even if you missed that window to try Knockout City without paying for it, you can still check it out without dropping a dime: the game is now free to try up until you level up your “Street Rank” (Knockout City’s take on a Fortnite-like battle pass) to 25.

That level cap should give you few hours of playtime to try Knockout City for yourself and decide if you want to pay full price for it. And I recommend you give the game a whirl — I was impressed with just how well it captures the feeling of actually playing dodgeball.

Knockout City is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, and Nintendo Switch, and it offers crossplay multiplayer, meaning you can play with your friends no matter what platform they’re on.

‘We’re Free Because They Were Brave’ - The New York Times

A day set aside to honor the sacrifices of the nation’s veterans, Memorial Day 2021 was especially poignant a year after many memorial ceremonies — and many family trips and barbecues — were curtailed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Parades that had been canceled in 2020 were back in 2021. Services held online last year resumed in person this year. Holiday traffic returned, as did beach outings — at least in parts of the country not cursed with cold, rainy weather.

President Biden honored the fallen at Arlington National Cemetery, delivering an emotional speech under a blue, sunlit sky just a day after the five-year anniversary of the death of his son Beau, who had served in Iraq. “It can hurt to remember, but the hurt is how we feel, and how we heal,” Mr. Biden said after placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. He called on Americans to keep the fallen members of the military in their minds. “We’re free because they were brave,” he said.

Clippers-Mavericks: Luka Doncic's free-throw woes have become elephant in room, and Dallas has lost its way - CBS Sports

untitled-design-11.png
Getty Images

Had you asked the Dallas Mavericks, prior to the start of their first-round series vs. the Clippers, if they'd be happy with a 2-2 tie heading into Game 5, they almost certainly would've said yes. On paper, as a lower-seeded team going against a top-tier championship contender, they're in about as good a spot as one could reasonably expect. But it's the way they got to this point that stings.

Dallas was up 2-0 in this series and had a 19-point lead in Game 3. You could feel the Clippers about to snap. All the pressure they were feeling after blowing that 3-1 lead vs. Denver in the bubble, the Paul George critics circling like vultures, Luka Doncic playing out of his mind -- to whatever extent momentum matters, the Mavericks had all of it.

Now here we are, with the Clippers having completely flipped the script, stripping Dallas of its brimming confidence while reclaiming home-court advantage with a 106-81 win on Sunday. Credit the Clippers. The obits on their failed super-team experiment were already being written. Odds on Kawhi Leonard's next team were being calculated. It was all going to hell. Less resilient squads would've been booking vacations two days ago.

But the Clippers fought back, and now it's the Mavericks on the ropes. Leonard -- who has sunk 38 of his 53 shots (72 percent) over the last three games, including 9 for 15 from 3-point range -- is suddenly on a refuse-to-lose crusade. George, who has quietly been really good this whole series, is right there with him. The Clippers have dialed all the way in defensively.

Meanwhile, Doncic (neck strain) appears strained to hold his head up straight. He grimaced his way to 19 points on Sunday, shanking six of his seven 3-point attempts and all five of his free throws. That latter stat has become an elephant in the room. Doncic, who shot 73 percent from the free-throw line this season and 76 percent last season, is 13 for 32 (40 percent) from the stripe in this series.

If anyone deserves some slack, it's Doncic. Again, he's playing hurt, and his level of responsibility for carrying this Mavericks team is appreciably higher than any other player in these playoffs. He averaged 38 points through the first three games. Shot 46 percent from 3. Made every play the Mavericks needed.

Still, they need more than this at the free-throw line. If Dallas is lucky, the last two, or possibly three, games in this series are going to be tight, and we're not talking about a few misses here. Luka cannot hit anything. The free-throw line looks like the last place on earth he wants to be. A pitcher in Yankee Stadium who has lost his control. It's emblematic of the Mavericks as a whole. Their confidence has been visibly sapped.

If a cold streak like this could be explained, perhaps you could look to Luka's 41-percent mark on off-the-dribble jumpers (typically highly contested) against his 36-percent mark on unguarded catch-and-shoots, per Synergy. Something in there might suggest a certain level of discomfort the more time he has to think. More and more, primary ball-handlers prefer to generate their shooting rhythm off the dribble. Thin as it is, it's the only explanation I can imagine.

In light of his neck injury, it's too bad that Doncic's supposed co-star, Kristaps Porzingis, can't launch an emergency rescue mission, but that ship has seemingly sailed. Some decent numbers notwithstanding, Porzingis has been a non-factor in this series. I don't know why Dallas is posting him up so much; he's about as sturdy in there as a three-legged chair. Defensively, he's a minus. He doesn't deter anything at the rim. He struggles to guard the perimeter. He loses guys off the ball for easy cuts.

Honestly, Porzingis' place on this Dallas team is another story for another day. There are a lot of factors, his bloated contract chief among them. For now, Dallas just has to hope for one wild-card game from Porzingis. If not for that, Luka is on his own as the sole star provider.

If Doncic can regain his dominance, he has help. Tim Hardaway Jr. was lights out from beyond the arc in the first three games before going 0 for 4 in Game 4. Maxi Kleber, Dorian Finney-Smith, Jalen Brunson, all these guys have hit shots this series. They'll have to get hot. It's not over yet. But considering where they were with a 2-0 series lead and a 30-11 Game 3 lead, this sure is starting to feel like a series the Mavericks have let get away from them.

Google Photos ends unlimited free storage tomorrow. Here's everything you need to do - CNET

Google is ending its unlimited free storage policy June 1.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Google Photos will end its unlimited free storage policy for photos and videos on Tuesday, June 1 (tomorrow!). After that, any new photos and videos you upload will count toward the free 15GB of storage that comes with every Google account. But don't worry: Any photos or videos you've uploaded before that day won't be part of the cap. And Google has added a new free tool to help you manage your storage quota.

The move, announced in November, is meant to encourage people to sign up for Google's storage subscription service, Google One. Google One plans start at $2 a month in the US for 100GB of storage and other features, like Google Store discounts.

Read more: 6 of the best photo storage options for 2021

It's a good idea to make sure your existing photos and videos are backed up in Google Photos before the Tuesday deadline, since those will be considered free and exempt from the storage limit. You can check your backup quality in the Photos app by going to Settings > Back up & sync

Once the change takes effect, more than 80% of current Google Photos users should still be able to store about three years of content with that free 15GB. Google will notify you in the app and by email once you get close to hitting your 15GB limit. You can also find a personalized estimate for how long your free storage may last, based on how frequently you back up photos and videos to your Google Account.

In May, Google added a new tool in the Photos app to help you manage the photos and videos you've backed up that count toward your 15GB storage quota. It will surface photos or videos that you might want to delete, like photos that are blurry or screenshots, or videos that are large, to better manage the storage you have.

More than 4 trillion photos are stored in Google Photos, the company said in November, with 28 billion new photos and videos uploaded each week. In May, Google unveiled new Photos features including the ability to remove photos from your Memories and new AI-powered techniques to make your photos come alive

Free Otero AlcĂĄntara - The Wall Street Journal

It’s impossible to know if Luis Manuel Otero AlcĂĄntara has become yet another victim of psychiatric torture by the Cuban military dictatorship. But it sure looks that way. The 33-year-old artist has been held incommunicado at Havana’s Calixto Garcia Hospital since May 2.

A short, edited video of Mr. Otero AlcĂĄntara, released by regime surrogates via social media on May 20, has alarmed friends, supporters and the human-rights community. Amnesty International has declared him a prisoner of conscience. On Wednesday the New York Review of Books ran an open letter from more than 30 artists and writers across the globe demanding his release.

Don’t bet on it. This poor Afro-Cuban, armed only with his courage, intellect and creativity, is an existential threat to Cuba’s ruling elite.

Mr. Otero AlcĂĄntara is a founder of the San Isidro Movement, a collection of Cuban artists, writers, musicians, students and researchers formed in 2018 to oppose regime censorship. He was on a hunger strike to protest state confiscation of his artwork when police carted him off. They wanted to put an end to the public spectacle of his deteriorating physical condition.

The dictatorship also may have thought that by “hospitalizing” Mr. Otero AlcĂĄntara it would gag the movement—and maybe even get rid of him. (He’s in the same hospital where Ladies in White leader Laura PollĂĄn died in 2011 at the height of her effectiveness as a regime critic.) But rising international criticism suggests the strategy could backfire.

Mr. Otero AlcĂĄntara is known for his high energy, but in the regime’s video he is sitting on the edge of a bed, clad in a robe, shoulders slumping, subdued. Like any hostage tape it is proof of life but no more. He is not permitted visitors of his own choosing or access to an independent doctor, lawyer or foreign diplomats. He’s committed no crime but is not allowed to use his phone or make contact with anyone outside the hospital.

Because the regime has a history of using psychiatric tools like drugs and electroshock against nonconformists, the video also has raised concerns about his safety.

For decades Cuba has easily manipulated aspiring artists who need the state as their patron. That cooperation is dissolving and Havana is feeling it. In February a music video titled “Patria y Vida”—“Homeland and Life”—went viral. In the video black Cuban artists Yotuel Romero, Descemer Bueno, the duo Gente de Zona, Maykel Osorbo (now jailed, whereabouts unknown) and El Funky (under house arrest), along with Mr. Otero AlcĂĄntara, decry the tyranny they live under. “Who told you that Cuba is yours,” the lyrics ask. “Your time is up, the silence is broken.”

Last week a group of Cuban artists called on the Museum of Fine Arts in Havana to remove their work until Mr. Otero AlcĂĄntara is released. The captors deny the artist is being detained. Not only is that a lie, but since April 30 at least six others have been jailed for supporting him.

Intellectuals have long celebrated the revolutionary chic of Fidel Castro because he was anti-American. Never mind that Cuba violently suppresses thought and creativity. Mr. Otero AlcĂĄntara, Mr. Osorbo and the broader San Isidro Movement are the victims of this double standard and are calling it out. They are supported by the likes of former University of Havana professors Pablo Betancourt and Enrique Patterson, Afro-Cubans who also dared think independently.

The despots’ playbook for six decades has been to divide the opposition at home and isolate it from the world. Mr. Otero AlcĂĄntara leads a moral reawakening to upend that strategy, which is why he is now their prisoner.

Ms. O’Grady is the Journal’s Americas columnist.

Barcelona sign Sergio Aguero from Manchester City on free transfer - ESPN

Sergio Aguero will join Barcelona on a free transfer from Manchester City when his contract expires next month, the Spanish club announced Monday.

Aguero, 32, has agreed to a two-year deal with a €100 million buyout clause after announcing earlier this season that he would end his 10-year association with City.

- La Liga on ESPN+: Stream LIVE games and replays (U.S. only)
- ESPN+ announces multiyear La Liga rights deal
- Lionel Messi: The ultimate history at Barcelona

The striker made his final appearance for the club as a second-half substitute in City's Champions League final defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.

After flying into Barcelona on Sunday, Aguero underwent a medical at the Creu Blanca clinic Monday. The club's medical staff oversaw extensive checks on his left knee, which he injured against Burnley last June and hindered his involvement with City this season.

Barca will hold a brief presentation for Aguero on Monday before he flies out to Argentina to join up with the national team ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia.

Barca have been searching for a new No. 9 since letting Luis Suarez leave for Atletico Madrid last year.

President Joan Laporta had met with Erling Haaland's representatives to discuss a potential move, but the costs involved made the deal prohibitive.

Barca, therefore, have had to look for players in a different price bracket, and sources at the club refer to Aguero as a "market opportunity" given his contract with City is up on June 30 and he arrives for free.

However, the signing of Aguero does not rule out further arrivals in attack this summer. The club are also in talks with Lyon's Memphis Depay, who is also out of contract next month, and haven't ruled out signing a younger forward if the option arises, too.

Aguero will hope to link up with international teammate Lionel Messi at Camp Nou next season.

Messi, 33, is also out of contract on June 30, but Laporta says talks to extend his deal are "going well." Sources previously told ESPN that Barca are hopeful of agreeing to a two-year playing deal with Messi, with the option for an additional year.

Messi and Aguero have been international teammates for the better part of 20 years. They played alongside each other as Argentina won the U20 World Cup in 2005 and were gold-medal winners at the Olympic Games in 2008 with the Albiceleste.

Aguero scored 260 goals for City during a decade in the Premier League, including the title-clinching goal when they won the English top flight in 2011-12 for the first time in 44 years.

Injuries have restricted him to just 20 appearances and six goals this season. He netted twice against Everton last weekend in his farewell game at the Etihad Stadium.

He previously spent five years playing in Spain with La Liga champions Atletico, who he joined from Independiente as an 18-year-old, scoring 102 goals in 234 matches.

Looking ahead to the Philadelphia Eagles' pending 2022 free agents - Eagles Wire

As the Eagles work towards the start of the 2021 NFL season, it’s never too early for a look ahead at Philadelphia’s pending 2022 free agents list.

The Eagles will have 46 guys eligible for some form of free agency, with Dallas Goedert, Jordan Mailata, and Derek Barnett the homegrown headliners. Guys like Anthony Harris, Eric Wilson, and Ryan Kerrigan also return to the open market.

Alshon Jeffery also carries a dead money cap hit of $5.4 million.

Here’s an early look.

2022-2023 years automatically void

Graham’s contract extension essentially became a one-year deal with the other two years as voids. The Eagles brought Graham back for his leadership, but he’ll be 33 at the end of this season, and Philadelphia will have Josh Sweat and Derek Barnett as free agents.

2022-2025 automatically void prior to 2022 league year ($15M of dead cap)

In 2021, Kelce will earn a base salary of $1,075,000 and a signing bonus of $7,925,000, while carrying a cap hit of $5,574,000.

2022-2023 are dummy years that automatically void

In 2021, Ertz will earn a base salary of $8,500,000, while carrying a cap hit of $12,721,500 and a dead cap value of $7,769,500.

Rodney McLeod/UFA

14. Rodney McLeod: $5,200,000

McLeod will be 32 and the leader of the Eagles secondary could need a career year to return.

Anthony Harris/UFA

Derek Barnett/UFA

10. Derek Barnett: $10,051,000

In 2021, Barnett will earn a base salary of $10,051,000, while carrying a cap hit of $10,051,000 and a dead cap value of $10,051,000.

The former first-round pick could be in line for a 4-year, $40 million deal that could add more cap space for the Eagles.

Dallas Goedert/UFA

It makes no sense to use the franchise tag on Goedert.

The Eagles legit No. 1 tight end once Zach Ertz moves on, Goedert could be in line for a breakout season.

A solid contributor over the past three seasons, Goedert has 137 receptions, 1,465 yards receiving, and 12 touchdowns in 42 career games.

Goedert hasn’t been an elite tight end, but neither is Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry, and both were paid well this offseason by the New England Patriots. The Eagles’ tight end won’t get Travis Kelce or George Kittle money, but he’s just as valuable as Smith and Henry potential-wise.

In 11 games played during the 2020 NFL season, Goedert finished outside the top-16 in catches and yards, but his numbers were better than Smith’s and slightly behind Henry despite playing three fewer games.

Goedert could be in line for a four-year, $52 million contract with the Eagles, with the tight end getting around $30 million in fully guaranteed salary.

Per Over The Cap, that number would be put Goedert at $13 million per season, and right behind Travis Kelce for the highest average per year.
