Salem pool opening set for June 12 with free day - Morning Journal News

SALEM — Get your swimsuits ready Salem — Centennial pool and splash pad will open June 12 with free admission for all the first day.

Salem Parks and Recreation Pool Manager and Recreation Supervisor Amber Smith announced the details during a recent meeting of the Salem Parks Commission.

Hours are 1 to 7 p.m. daily, with a free adult swim (over 18) from noon to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. A concession stand, which is new this year, will be operated at the pool from 1 to 6 p.m. daily, with restrictions on what people can bring with them.

Parks Foreman Jim Grimm reported on some of the recent prep work done to get the pool and pool area ready to open this year. A group of 14 scouts and their parents helped out and saved the workers a lot of time.

“We really appreciate that,” Parks Director Shane Franks said.

The pool was closed last year due to the pandemic.

“The pool’s going to be moving right along, getting ready for the inspection,” Grimm said.

Arrangements had been made for a company to do an evaluation of the pool last year, but without the pool being open, the inspection couldn’t be done. The inspection will be done just a few days before the pool opens for 2021.

The commission put out a call for lifeguards two months ago and even offered to help with the training costs, attracting a few more candidates who were hired. Smith said the crew includes nine lifeguards, with Brendan Cole the new head lifeguard. Two of the lifeguards will complete their training just before the pool opens.

Daily admission prices are $5 for adults, $4 for students and senior citizens (62 years plus) and $3 for children age 5 and under.

Season passes are $60 for an individual, $100 for a family of five and up to five family members can be added to the family pass for $25 each.

Season passes can be purchased at the Salem Parks & Recreation Office, 2222 Oak St., just off of Southeast Boulevard, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Once the pool opens, passes can be purchased at the pool at Centennial Park.

The pool is available for rent for any special occasion from 7 to 10 p.m. at a rate of $35 per hour. Each lifeguard needed (depending on expected attendance) must be paid $15 per hour the night of the rental.

Anyone with questions about the pool can call Smith at 330-271-8913.
