WALNUT GROVE — All exhibits are free on Monday, May 31, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., when the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum presents an artist reception for “Don’t Doubt Your Horses.” This interactive exhibit of 400 drawings by area artist Dan Wahl invites gallery visitors to draw horses and add them to the exhibit.
“Don’t Doubt Your Horses” is housed in the Masters Store and Hall, a historic treasure acquired by the museum several years ago. Laura Ingalls of “Little House” books fame had a job there as little girl growing up in Walnut Grove, and her Pa, Charles Ingalls, helped construct the building. The museum is gradually restoring it, and visitors can get a look at the rough interior.
Wahl’s interactive work has been six years in the making, and displays his belief that art is for everyone. In addition to the exhibit on the second floor of the Masters Store and Hall, there is a virtual display in the museum gift shop. Colored pencils, markers, crayons, and blank postcards await visitors who would like to draw a horse and add it to the gallery walls.
This activity is made possible by a grant from the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council with funds from The McKnight Foundation and a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
