Early Mavs’ 2021-22 roster outlook: Players under contract, plus potential free agents and extensions - The Dallas Morning News

As the Mavericks’ enter an offseason where they’ll have ample salary cap space — and an increased urgency to support superstar Luka Doncic — here’s a breakdown of the team’s contracts, potential extensions and departures from their 2020-21 roster:

Starters

Luka Doncic

2021-22 contract status: $10.2 million

What to know: If Doncic makes an All-NBA team when the league announces awards for this season, Doncic will be eligible this summer for a rookie max contract extension that will top $200 million. Expect his reps and the Mavs to reach a quick agreement.

Dorian Finney-Smith

2021-22 contract status: $4 million

What to know: Finney-Smith, who has developed into a strong 3-and-D player, is entering the final year of a three-year, $12 million deal he signed in 2019. The Mavericks can offer him an extension up to $55 million over four years this offseason, according to ESPN, to keep him from reaching unrestricted free agency in 2022.

Tim Hardaway Jr.

2021-22 contract status: Unrestricted free agent

What to know: Hardaway just finished a four-year, $70.95 million contract that he signed with the Knicks in 2017. The 29-year-old shooting guard finished the season as the Mavericks’ second best offensive player and will command strong interest on the free agent market this summer.

Maxi Kleber

2021-22 contract status: $8.9 million

What to know: Kleber just finished the second season of his four-year, $35.6 million deal, one riddled with injuries and a bout with COVID-19. He will not be an unrestricted free agent until 2023.

Kristaps Porzingis

2021-22 contract status: $31.65 million

What to know: Porzingis is entering the third season of his five-year, $158.235 million max deal he signed in 2019. After a rocky season with injury absences, the 25-year-old center played a background offensive role in the Mavericks’ playoff run but enters the offseason healthy for the first time in several years.

Rotation players

Jalen Brunson

2021-22 contract status: $1.8 million

What to know: Coming off his best season yet, Brunson is entering the last year of his second-round rookie contract. The Mavericks can offer Brunson up to a four-year, $55 million extension on the first day of free agency this summer, according to ESPN, if they want to keep him from reaching unrestricted free agency in 2022.

Willie Cauley-Stein

2021-22 contract status: $4.1 million team option

What to know: The Mavericks’ have until Aug. 1 to exercise or decline Cauley-Stein’s contract option. In his first full season with the Mavericks, Cauley-Stein averaged 5.3 points and 4.3 rebounds a game in a back-up center role, despite missing 12 games after the All-Star break because of COVID-19 protocol.

Dwight Powell

2021-22 contract status: $11.08 million

What to know: Powell is entering the second season of the three-year, $33.2 million extension he signed in 2019. The 29-year-old center appeared to find his rhythm and confidence late in the 2020-21 season, his first year back from January 2020 Achilles tendon surgery, and plans to play for the Canadian national team in the FIBA Olympic qualifier in a few weeks.

Josh Richardson

2021-22 contract status: $11.6 million player option

What to know: Richardson will become a free agent if he declines the option, but after a decrease in playing time and productivity once he lost his starting spot this spring, it’s unclear what value Richardson might command. Richardson has until Aug. 1 to decide — and he cannot be used in any trade, should the Mavericks pursue one, until he opts in.

Reserves

Tyler Bey

2021-22 contract status: Restricted free agent

What to know: The No. 36 overall draft pick in 2020, Bey showed potential for two-way impact during his stint in the G League bubble, and the Mavericks plan for him to be on their NBA summer league team this August.

Trey Burke

2021-22 contract status: $3.15 million

What to know: Burke will be entering his second season of the three-year, $9.45 million deal he reached last November.

Josh Green

2021-22 contract status: $2.96 million

What to know: Ahead of the second year on his four-year rookie contract, Green plans to play for the Australian national team in the rescheduled 2020 Olympics.

Nate Hinton

2021-22 contract status: Restricted free agent

What to know: After his undrafted rookie season, Hinton will likely play with the Mavericks in the NBA’s summer league in August.

Boban Marjanovic

2021-22 contract status: Unrestricted free agent

What to know: While Marjanovic’s biggest impact in two years in Dallas came off the court with his positivity and humor, the 7-4 Marjanovic proved to be a matchup X-factor when the Mavericks wanted to play big on offense, including late in their first-round series against the Clippers.

Nicolo Melli

2021-22 contract status: Restricted free agent

What to know: The Mavericks will have the right to match other teams’ free agent offers to Melli, whom they acquired from the Pelicans as part of the late March trade for JJ Redick.

JJ Redick

2021-22 contract status: Unrestricted free agent

What to know: A recurring right Achilles injury kept Redick from making a significant on-court impact for the Mavericks after his trade deadline arrival. Don’t expect Redick to be one of the Mavericks’ signing priorities during free agency.

Tyrell Terry

2021-22 contract status: $1.5 million

What to know: After a disjointed rookie season, Terry will enter Year 2 of his four-year rookie deal aiming for more consistent development.
