Free little libraries grace neighborhoods - Powell Tribune

There is a new library in town. A Little Free Library, that is.

The pale green box, located at 236 N. Division St., is an attempt by Pam and Dennis Kresky to share their love of reading and books.

The program is an international book-sharing movement intended to build community, inspire readers and expand book access. There are more than 100,000 little libraries in the world, and now four listed in the Powell area.

“A lot of people don’t know what it is and we’re trying to get books in hands,” Pam Kresky said.

Of special importance to the Kreskys are children’s books.

“This was something I just wanted to do and as a retired children’s librarian, it’s in my DNA,” said Pam. “It’s proven that if you can get books in (children’s) hands (that they like) they become readers.”

She also noted there are an estimated 30,000 adults nationwide who read at a third grade level or below.

The Kreskys built the box, although there are numerous styles to order from the Little Free Library website. The couple applied for a charter from the organization, with their small library receiving its own number and being been placed on a world map available online. The map allows would-be patrons to locate the little libraries in their neighborhood.

Around Powell, there are locations publicly listed at 681 Road 7; on Lodgepole Court, honoring Ted Haines; at 375 N. Cheyenne St.; and now the little green box on Division Street. There are other spots not on the list.

The libraries work on an honor system: Take a book, leave a book. Or take a book and return it later.

“If you don’t have anything to share, that’s fine, too,” Pam said.

In the short time the box has been installed, there have been multiple notes left on the notepad inside, indicating the service was needed and is appreciated in the neighborhood.

“This is for pleasure reading,” she said. “We have fiction, Westerns, C.J. Box books — who doesn’t love C.J. Box?”

The Kreskys wanted people to know that the free service will also accept donations. Donated books may be left on their porch or at the Little Free Library. The couple checks on the box and the books every day.
