Free parking in Woodsfield this week and next - Martins Ferry Times Leader

WOODSFIELD — For the next two weeks, Woodsfield residents and visitors can park at any meter in the village at no cost thanks to Woodsfield Savings Bank, which has sponsored the meters as a part of a community project.

A clear plastic cover tops every parking meter in the village, alerting motorists that parking is now free. Village Administrator Kevin Brooks said all 48 meters throughout the community will offer free parking until June 15. This is the first time the meters have been sponsored by a business in the village, he said.

“They wanted to do a community project, and this is the one they chose,” he said. “As long as I’ve worked here, we’ve never had anything like this done before.”

Tracey Craig, president and CEO of Woodsfield Savings Bank, said the institution is always looking for different ways to make a positive impact in the communities it serves. Providing free parking is just one way to give back this year.

“We have alway been supporters of community and school events, nonprofit organizations and give out several academic scholarships each year. We also buy lunch once a month for an area business who banks with us as a way to say thank you. The free parking is just another way to give back and thank all of the hard-working people in our community,” he added.

Brooks said the local bank contacted the village and inquired about pricing for the meters. He said village officials calculated the revenue the meters provide the village and alerted the bank to the estimated cost. Bank officials then offered an undisclosed amount to cover the costs of the meters for the next couple of weeks.

“They came up with a figure and we accepted it,” he said.

Brooks said it was a “very nice” gesture to help out local residents looking to utilize village parking. He said village employees are happy to have been included in the bank’s project for the community.
