The S.C. Drought Response Committee declared Colleton drought free on June 23.
After reviewing conditions, the committee decided that the recent active rainfall from Tropical System Claudette was enough to alleviate the drought for the state and maintain the no drought or “normal” status for all counties.
The SCDNR hydrology report showed that recent rain events relieved declining streams and increased lake elevations and groundwater levels.
Cottageville reported 7.37 inches of rainfall as of June 22, with communities in surrounding counties receiving anywhere from three to 12 inches, according to the report.
Committee members from the four Drought Management Areas reevaluated conditions statewide and all agreed that there was no support for a drought declaration at this time.
Leslie Woodham, with the SC Forestry Commission Fire Staff, reported that the state has experienced fewer forest fires in past weeks. “We haven’t had too many forest fires recently,” said Woodham. “Even areas that were in the incipient stages of drought have remained relatively fire free due to higher humidity and the green vegetation.”
Agriculture officials from the USDA Farm Service are also happy with the rainfall. According to their report released last week, recent rains have relieved stress on crops. Corn is doing well and greater yields are expected. Soybeans are ready to be planted now that fields are not too dry, the report states.
