CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois DB Tailon Leitzsey is hosting a free football camp for kids from the Champaign-Urbana community on July 17 from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The camp is located at Zahnd Field in Champaign and will be open to children ages 6-13.
"I live in Urbana and I've seen over the last year kind of a rise in crime," Leitzsey said. "When I was looking up some of the news, I realized a lot of people that were doing the crime were younger people and that was something that really touched my heart. I wanted to be able to help the youth before they get to that point where they feel like they need to do that. That's where this idea came from to do a free camp for the community."
Leitzsey is a senior for the Fighting Illini and graduated with a degree in Kinesiology in December 2020. He was awarded a scholarship by head coach Bret Bielema during a team meeting April 6, 2021 (video), following a long road in college football and life. Leitzsey walked on to the Fighting Illini in 2018 after working two jobs and sleeping in his car for multiple nights to make his dream a possibility (Story by 247Sports).
"I really just want to give back," Leitzsey said. "It's not about money for me, it's more about helping the kids not go that route. If they come into this camp and they can learn something that will take them off the path that they might think they're headed down, then that's my goal to just help change one life."
Parents can RSVP for the camp by scanning the QR code on the flyer below.
