Portage Park Kids Can Get Backpacks With Free School Supplies This Saturday - Block Club Chicago

PORTAGE PARK — Families getting ready for the upcoming school year can get a backpack full of free school supplies this weekend.

On Saturday, Storehouse Church, 5701 W. Montrose Ave., will give away 500 backpacks for free for its Back to School Bash event 9 a.m.-12 p.m. or while supplies last.

The drive-thru event will take place in the rear of the church building.

Organizers are also raffling a free iPad for any student in first through 12th grade. People can sign up for the raffle online and are asked to bring proof of registration and school status to the event.

Chicago students are set to return to school Aug. 30.

Chicago Public Schools will require all students and teachers to wear masks indoors — every district in the state is now required to do so under Gov. JB Pritzker’s executive order. Although the exact testing protocol for students and teachers is still being negotiated with the Chicago Teachers Union, the school district said Wednesday that it plans to offer weekly testing to all students, regardless of vaccination status.
