The Baltimore Ravens brought in multiple new wide receivers to provide a boost to their passing offense in Sammy Watkins, Rashod Bateman, and Tylan Wallace. The trio joins a wideout room that also consists of Marquise Brown, Devin Duvernay, James Proche II and Miles Boykin, so Baltimore has no shortage of talented pass catchers.

Despite having a lot of depth at receiver, injuries have hit the position hard so far in 2021. Both Bateman and Boykin are on injured reserve for the time being, while Brown missed a chunk of training camp with a lingering injury.

Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report put together a list of eight teams that could be landing spots for now-free agent wideout John Brown, and Baltimore was one of the teams mentioned. When explaining why he believes the Ravens are a good spot, Gagnon mentioned the injuries to their wide receiver corps.

“Rookie first-round pick Rashod Bateman (core) and young depth receiver Miles Boykin (hamstring) are both on short-term injured reserve for the Ravens, who in the meantime could use another proven pass-catcher to work with Marquise Brown, Sammy Watkins and Devin Duvernay.”

He also talked about Brown’s history with the Baltimore organization, as he spent one season with the team back in 2018.

“John Brown had a relatively productive season stretching the field for head coach John Harbaugh’s team in 2018. It would make a lot of sense for the Ravens to bring him back on the cheap while we await verdicts on Boykin, Bateman and fellow rookie Tylan Wallace.”

While Brown is still a talented receiver, the offense has changed quite a bit since he left the Ravens. He enjoyed most of his success in Baltimore while quarterback Joe Flacco was at the helm, but once Lamar Jackson took over  Browns’ numbers took a nosedive. Bateman also isn’t expected to be out much longer that the first month or so of the season, so once the rookie returns there might be a surplus of receivers fighting for snaps and catches.

The idea of adding Brown to the Ravens’ roster isn’t a bad one. However, when it’s looked at through a microscope, it doesn’t feel like the best fit at this time, especially since it seems like Baltimore wants to see what they have in their young players at the wide receiver position.
