‘Genshin Impact’ Can Afford A Free Anniversary 5 Star Reward - Forbes

The Genshin Impact playerbase continues to revolt against miHoYo’s refusal to offer meaningful rewards for its one year anniversary event. While there are a large number of contests and events ongoing, the rewards offered within them are paltry, and some are even tied to gacha odds, like one which will give 90% of players 100,000 Mora, and 10% Blessing of the Welkin Moon, a good amount of primogems over the course of a month.

Players want more than that, and are saying that miHoYo is being too stingy, given the absurd amount of revenue that Genshin Impact rakes in. Gacha games are often pretty generous with free rewards and during anniversary events like this, given the money they make elsewhere, and because they want to keep their playerbase happy, but Genshin has clearly missed the mark here, and is now getting ratioed on every single social media post about the lack of good anniversary rewards.

The most common thing I see players asking for are some free heroes for a change and namely, a free 5 star. The best idea, the one that makes the most sense to me, is this player who says that people should be offered a “base” free 5 star, the kind that are found in the regular pool outside of specialty banners:

Jean, Mona, Diluc, Keqing and Qiqi are the game’s original 5 stars, outside of your hero, and avid players may have a few copies of each by now. Veterans would benefit from another constellation level on any of these, while new players would get a strong 5 star, but not one stronger than nearly all the new banners that come out, so it’s not a huge deal. After a year, I think the playerbase deserves the choice of a single new five star, especially if we’re not talking about any of the limited banner run ones.

Genshin Impact is in no danger of seeing spending drop. Its release of Baal/Ei/The Raiden Shogun was one of its most profitable days in its history, and the game is only continuing to grow and increase its revenue. A little goodwill goes a long way, and it’s clear that miHoYo has picked the wrong path here in terms of its anniversary rewards.

Generally speaking, miHoYo usually does to cave to fan pressure eventually, and they are weirdly generous in other areas, with some fans joking that they get more rewards for downtime or game bugs than they are for this anniversary event.

A free 5 star costs them nothing, would engender good vibes in the playerbase and would not decrease their revenue prospects going forward. It’s the right move, and I hope they realize that.
