The Buckeyes pulled away late for a 41-20 win against Tulsa. Akron earned its first win of the season with a 35-14 win vs. Bryant in its most recent game.

Ohio State football coach Ryan Day said he plans to rest C.J. Stroud’s sore shoulder Saturday against Akron and play the team’s other quarterbacks.
Day said on his Thursday radio show that Stroud has sat out the last couple of days of practice to rest his shoulder. He said the starting quarterback from the first three games will likely only be available on an “emergency” basis against Akron.
That means true freshman Kyle McCord and redshirt freshman Jack Miller III are expected to play the majority of quarterback snaps this week. Day said he would likely inform Saturday’s starter of his assignment on Friday.
“Kyle and Jack have done a good job, so the plan right now is to — we’ll see how today goes — but probably use C.J. in somewhat of an emergency capacity on Saturday and play some of those other guys,” Day said.
Neither McCord nor Miller has played a snap through the first three games. Miller did play a couple of games of backup action last season but has not thrown a pass in a game. Day said both have shared reps with the first-string offense this week.
Day said he expected to name a starter and bring the other quarterback in as game control dictated, as opposed to switching series between the two. Ohio State is a 49-point favorite against Akron.
Day said the game reps will provide a “great evaluation going forward” for the entire quarterback room. When he named Stroud the starter in mid-August, he said that applied only to the season opener. Stroud responded by winning Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the first two games.
“It’s the same situation we had with C.J. in the first game,” Day said, referring to Stroud’s lack of any pass attempts prior to the season opener. “We have young quarterbacks and that’s going to be how it works. At some point, you let them play and learn from their mistakes.
“It’s all about their preparation. They’re going against good guys in practice. It’s time to let some other guys get some action.”
Day said that, as of Thursday, true freshman Quinn Ewers would be unavailable to play on Saturday.
