BIG RAPIDS – Eye health is an important part of maintaining overall health, especially while growing up, and Ferris State University’s College of Optometry is offering families this important check-up service for free.

On Tuesday, Nov. 30, The University’s Michigan College of Optometry will be providing comprehensive eye exams for around 50 children from Fremont and Hesperia Public Schools here at the Ferris State University Eye Center in Big Rapids. Optometry students and faculty will be providing the exams.

Sarah Hinkley, Chief of Vision Rehabilitation Services at the College of Optometry, said the aim is to provide a service for those who might not be able to afford it otherwise.

“We are targeting kids who otherwise lack access to eye care services,” Hinkley said. “All kids who need glasses will receive them, all at no cost to families through a grant from the Fremont Area Community Foundation with support from the college and Fremont Lions Club. The kids range from kindergarten to 8th grade, but mostly elementary and all families have signed media releases.”

“The program didn’t happen last year due to COVID-19,” she added. “The smiles and happiness on the kids’ faces is something amazing to see as they experience clear vision. It's a really wonderful program.”

Participating kids will arrive at the College of Optometry around 9:15 a.m. and will be here until 1:30 p.m. with a break for lunch around 11-11:30. Eye exams will take place in the third floor Dow Interactive Eye Learning Center in the Michigan College of Optometry building on the Ferris State University campus with free parking in the patient parking lot.
