Read some of what Stephen Means wrote about if C.J. Stroud can be the next Ohio State quarterback to dominate Michigan.
Ryan Day’s quarterbacks have dominated the Ohio State vs. Michigan football rivalry.
Outside of a 2017 win where J.T. Barrett was limited, and Dwayne Haskins had to finish the game, Day’s quarterbacks often used The Game to provide the punctuation on their cases as Heisman Trophy candidates.
Haskins did so in 2018 by completing 20 of 31 passes for 396 yards and six touchdowns in a 62-39 win, picking apart Don Brown’s defense as a rare underdog.
Justin Fields went up to Ann Arbor in 2019 and was 14-of-25 for 302 yards and four touchdowns. One offered his best moment of the season -- after being knocked out of a game, he emerged from the medical tent one play later, scrambled left, then hit Garrett Wilson for a 30-yard touchdown.
Neither ever got an encore in the rivalry -- Haskins went pro while Fields’ Round 2 was canceled by COVID. Now it’s C.J. Stroud’s turn, and he seems to have built momentum the other two may not have had.
Haskins was coming off a 52-51 overtime win over Maryland, where the only reason the Buckeyes didn’t lose is that the Terrapins couldn’t convert a two-point conversion. There were plenty of good reasons why people thought Jim Harbaugh would get his first win in the rivalry.
The last time people saw Fields before The Game, he was being helped off the field against Penn State after injuring his right knee. He’d played well, but wasn’t yet dominant. That team had J.K. Dobbins to carry the load offensively while Chase Young and Jeff Okudah led the nation’s best defense.
Stroud is heading to Ann Arbor with the nation’s best offense. In wins over Purdue and Michigan State, he completed 63 of 73 (86.3%) for 793 and 11 touchdowns without an interception. OSU has put up 115 points in the process.
It’s normal to think that maybe Stroud comes back down to earth a little -- nobody can be that accurate for that many weeks in a row. Except this may be the biggest rivalry in sports. Coaches and players spend the week impatiently waiting to play this game.
“I honestly don’t want to answer any questions about them,” Stroud said in a radio interview this week. “I’m preparing like I’m always doing, (but) probably even more for this game. I’ll just leave it there.”
Stroud isn’t going to get too hyped. Like Fields, his stoic demeanor works against any moment becoming too big. But that’s not to be mistaken for someone who isn’t prepared to make his mark.
