Read some of what Nathan Baird of Cleveland.com wrote about how Ohio State defensive tackle Jerron Cage reflecting on his scoop and score as well the inspiration he draws from his son and an emotional call he got from a teammate.

You saw the culmination of Jerron Cage’s breakthrough, as the 308-pound Ohio State defensive tackle stormed his way to a 57-yard fumble return touchdown against Penn State.

You saw the aftermath, with the entire defensive line group crowded around Cage on the sideline, waving towels and helping him cool down from his career highlight jaunt.

What you did not hear, what no one else heard, was the phone call from former Buckeye defensive tackle Tommy Togiai that Cage said changed everything. It came last January, after Togiai tested positive for COVID-19. He could not play in the national championship game, pushing Cage into the starting lineup.

“He called me and he was crying,” Cage said. “I felt the love, like, I felt like his pain. So I just knew, OK, come on, it’s time to go.

“You really underestimate playing for your brothers until you actually do it. It was a great moment.”

The past 18 months of Cage’s life have been defined by coming through for others. His son, Jerron Jr., will soon turn one-and-a-half. Somehow, the younger Cage slept through the raucous applause inside Ohio Stadium during his father’s touchdown run last Saturday.

The fifth-year senior from Winton Woods near Cincinnati has spent much of his career fighting for a spot on the field. He was listed as unavailable for the first two games of this season and slowly scratched his way back to a bigger role. Now, he’s starting again and potentially establishing himself as a leader atop the defensive interior rotation.

“When you look at Jerron’s career here, it’s a tribute to him and his hard work,” OSU coach Ryan Day said. “It hasn’t always gone exactly the way that he’s wanted. He went through kind of a tough September and August there.

“To see him do that, have that opportunity in that game — that’s something I’ll definitely remember from this year, is the fact that he came into that big spot and made that play.”

Cage quickly clarified who should receive ultimate credit for the touchdown. If defensive ends Tyreke Smith and Zach Harrison had not converged on Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford, the ball would not have come loose. Cage would never have made the highlight reel.

“They made the play, I just finished it,” Cage said.

Cage remembers the ball emerging from Clifford’s hands almost in slow motion.

“I’m like, ‘Yeah, it’s about that time,’” Cage said. “The rest is history.”
