The Atlanta Falcons have to nail this offseason if they want to have a chance to compete in the near future. Year two is critical for any new general manager and head coach, it will either set you up for greatness or disaster.
The Falcons may not have very much money to be throwing around in free agency, but they need to find a way to sign a certain big-bodied receiver who could help this offense become what we have been so used to seeing in years past.
Mike Williams should headline the Falcons free agency targets
When watching the Atlanta Falcons offense in 2021, two things stuck out—their inability to protect in the run game and the passing game, and their lack of talent at the wide receiver position.
Mike Williams should be at the top of the Falcons target list when free agency opens. He is an extremely talented receiver who has been overshadowed by Keenan Allen in Los Angeles.
Signing Williams should be a priority even if Calvin Ridley returns to the team. Even when Ridley was on the field in 2021, the offense still lacked a physical presence on the outside, like Julio Jones always brought to the team.
This is why Mike Williams should be the main target. He is six-foot-four and 220 pounds, and he has some of the best physicality at the position in the entire league.
He most certainly won’t come cheap, but he would be well worth it.
It would also take some pressure off of Kyle Pitts as he enters his sophomore year. Pitts was relied on as the only big-body on the offense and while he is certainly capable of it, Mike Williams would only open up even more possibilities for Pitts.
Terry Fontenot needs to find a way to free up the cash to bring in Mike Williams. He would help make this offense look more like it did in 2016.
