The Chicago Bears didn’t make a splash during the first wave of free agency, but they did address some needs with some solid signings by new general manager Ryan Poles.

The Bears addressed offense with the additions of center Lucas Patrick and wide receivers Byron Pringle and Equanimeous St. Brown. On defense, they added defensive tackle Justin Jones, linebacker Nicholas Morrow and defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad.

But Poles isn’t done yet, as he’s someone who made it clear he’s a big proponent of the second and third waves of free agency. There are still plenty of roster holes to fill — both starting and depth roles — and there’s still work to be done.

Here’s a look at what positions the Bears still need to address following the first wave of free agency:

Free agency additions: Byron Pringle, Equanimeous St. Brown

The Bears added a pair of wideouts in Pringle and St. Brown during the first wave of free agency, but they’re far from done addressing the need at wide receiver. While Poles’ attempt to trade for Robert Woods indicated that he’s not done addressing the position, it’s more likely that wide receiver is a top target heading into the NFL draft at this point. Sure, Chicago could still add another veteran depth option to the roster. But look for Poles to target a young playmaker for Justin Fields with one of his two second-round picks next month.

Free agency additions: Lucas Patrick

When all is said and done, Patrick might be one of the best under-the-radar signings in free agency. He fills an important need at center for the Bears, brings with him an understanding of Luke Getsy’s scheme and will be beneficial for Fields. But even with Patrick’s addition, Chicago isn’t done on the offensive line. The Bears are still expected to add an offensive tackle, which is looking more likely to come in the NFL draft. Through the first wave of free agency, there’s a hole at right guard, which could be addressed soon.

Free agency additions: None

The one position group on this list that the Bears failed to address through the first wave of free agency is cornerback. Which makes sense given some veterans are likely to garner big paydays. Turning to the NFL draft for a young, affordable cornerback feels like the most likely outcome at this point. Although, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Poles make some depth moves through these next waves of free agency. Still, Chicago still likely doesn’t have their starter opposite Jaylon Johnson on the current roster. But Thomas Graham Jr. will have a chance to compete for a starting role.

Free agency additions: Nicholas Morrow

The Bears added Nicholas Morrow early in free agency, where the expectation is he’ll serve as one of the starters alongside Roquan Smith at linebacker. With Chicago switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 scheme, the Bears are still without a starting linebacker. There are still some intriguing names on the free agent market — and the Bears have $26 million in cap space, per Spotrac — so they could certainly address it in free agency. But with Chicago needing to extend Smith soon, they could turn to the NFL draft to find another linebacker.

Free agency additions: Re-signed DeAndre Houston-Carson

Poles has only re-signed two in-house free agents, and DeAndre Houston-Carson was an important one. Not only is he a key reserve at safety, but he’s a core special teamer. But the Bears still have a starting safety spot open opposite Eddie Jackson. While Houston-Carson can step in at starter when needed, Chicago needs to find a starter opposite Jackson. And there are still some intriguing options in free agency, as well as some intriguing prospects in the NFL draft.
