The Browns know they will have their hands full going against the Miami Dolphins’ passing game on Sunday.
But it’s about more than just preventing big vertical plays for a Browns defense that struggled with busted coverages and missed tackles earlier in the season.
Dolphins receivers Tyreek Hill and Jason Waddle have speed. Hill currently leads the NFL with 1,104 receiving yards on 76 catches. Waddle isn’t far behind, ranking fifth overall with 812 yards on just 47 receptions. But they both are also quick, and nightmares in open space -- Hill in particular.
“Everybody talks about the vertical speed, but if you throw him something short and you miss the tackle, he might go 70,” Browns defensive coordinator Joe Woods said on Wednesday. “He is definitely a handful to deal with, but we are familiar with him, and there are a couple of different things we will try to do to slow him down.
On top of being fast and quick, Hill has great hands and is a good route runner. Truthfully, there may only be so much opposing teams can do to stop a player like him -- which is why the Dolphins went all in on trading for him in the first place.
The game may come down to how much pressure the Browns can put on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who is having a great year. He is PFF’s highest-graded passer, leads the league in passer rating (115.9), has thrown only three interceptions and been sacked just eight times. He doesn’t have the biggest arm, but it helps when you have receivers who can pick up a lot of yards after the catch and you get the ball out fast.
