DHS free concert is canceled due to COVID surge - The Inter-Mountain

ELKINS — Davis Health System Foundation officials announced Thursday that a free outdoor community concert set for Saturday has been canceled due to the rise in active COVID-19 numbers in Randolph County.

Ironically, the concert was conceived as a “thank you” to everyone in the community for working together throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic resurgence has prompted Davis Health System officials to cancel the Vibe and Jive event slated for this Saturday at the Rotary Amphitheater in the Elkins Town Square,” a DHS press release announced Thursday afternoon.

Randolph County had 186 active COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday, the most recent total provided by the Randolph-Elkins Health Department.

That number is up 55 cases from the 131 active cases reported two days earlier on Monday. That total was up from 82 active cases on Aug. 9, which was more than triple the amount that was reported the prior week on Aug. 3, when there were just 28 cases. The county had zero active cases on July 12.

“The decision to cancel was made with everyone’s health and safety in mind,” said Davis Health System Foundation Executive Director Mike Bell.

“While we are disappointed that the event had to be canceled, we must lead by example in keeping the well-being of our community at the forefront throughout the pandemic,” Bell said.

“In light of a dramatic spike in COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations throughout Randolph and neighboring counties, DHS announced it will follow CDC recommendations to avoid large events and gatherings,” the press release stated.

“The live music, food trucks, and family activities, which were scheduled from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. have been canceled.”

Bell explained that the Cash Drawing planned in conjunction with the concert will still take place.

“We are continuing to offer tickets for the cash raffle which includes $250, $500, and $1,000 prizes,” he said. “Tickets can be purchased for $10 by calling or emailing the Foundation office.”

Proceeds from the raffle will go toward the purchase of new infant hearing screening equipment for the Family Birthing Center at DMC, officials said.

Cash raffle tickets will be on sale through Aug. 31 and can be purchased by calling 304-630-3043 or via email shifflett.jennie@davishealthsystem.org. The prize drawings will be held and announced Sept. 1, officials said.

The popular Pittsburgh band Dr. Zoot was scheduled to perform during the free concert at the Rotary Amphitheater in the Elkins Town Square Saturday.

Davis Health System Foundation was sponsoring the concert to thank the community for their support of front line healthcare workers throughout the pandemic.
