Pride and paydays. That’s all the New York Mets have left to play for, after officially being eliminated for postseason contention thanks to their current five-game losing streak.

Former ace Noah Syndergaard, who will be a free agent after the season, still hopes to return to a big-league mound this year as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

Syndergaard made his second rehab appearance with Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, throwing one scoreless inning and striking out two. Newsday’s Tim Healey reports Syndergaard could return to the Mets on Tuesday.

Also scheduled to be a free agent is infielder Javier Baez. And despite his thumbs-down mess with fans, Baez is very much open to returning to Citi Field according to NBC Sports Chicago. And a big reason why is his good friend Francisco Lindor.

“Obviously, Frankie wants me to stay,” Báez said. “He wants to make sure they make an offer if it’s possible, and see what happens in the offseason. ... I think me and Lindor are closer than (former Chicago Cubs teammates Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo). It’s a really special thing here. … I would love to stay here and play with him. ... And we haven’t been playing really well as a middle infield; we can do much better. But we’ve been here like two months. If it’s going to be a whole year, or 10 years. we obviously are going to get those adjustments to click and be [in sync]. ... I obviously don’t like the traffic. I don’t like the cold. But if they make the offer, and they make it happen, I would love to stay in New York.”

Sticking with the infield, the Mets most likely will be missing third baseman J.D. Davis for the rest of the season. SNY reports the Mets played Davis on the injured list Sunday with a left hand sprain.
